Hi.

I have been taking Bisoprolol 10mgs for about ten months and I am really struggling with it.

Have told my GP and hospital how I feel and I am still on it.

bisoprolol seem to give me more palpations than I had before. I admitt they don't seem as forceful but still getting me down I get them doing the slightest thing.... cant stand being on them much longer has any one else had the same problem taking this drug ? if so could you please let me know.

Hi Elaine,

Before responding to your post, I'll start with the usual caveat. Namely, that I'm not a medical professional - so please double (or triple) check anything I say!

Bisoprolol is a beta blocker and, to the best of my understanding, should help to control heart palpitations - not cause them. Here's a link to NHS Choices which outlines how they work and the known side effects etc.:

http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Beta-blockers/Pages/Introduction.aspx

If you click on the side-effects tab (above the video screen) - you'll see that the condition you describe is not listed. I would question whether Bisoprolol is the cause of the problem. I'm not saying it isn't (forgive the double negative), but it seems unlikely given what's known about beta blockers and how they work. Are you on any other medication which might cause palpitations? If not, then I suggest looking at diet - and drink especially - as a possible cause. If you're a heavy coffee drinker - this might be the cause? If there are no obvious things you can think of, try phoning the BHF helpline and, if they can't help, I suggest you go back to your GP and explain all the things you've done to get to the source of the problem.

Let us know how you get on.

Tim.

 Hi Tim ,

Thank you for your advice regarding my beta blocker Bisoprolol have been in touch with hospital yesterday as I am waiting for an  Ablation ..I have been told I am sensitive to adrenaline or at least my palpations are  so there will be a possibility I will have to go into hospital a few days before the procedure and they will drop the Bisoprolol , so at least I feel more secure if I have to do this.

Regards

Elaine

Hi Elaine,

Just wanted to say hello and welcome.  Have read your ablation post too. Am really pleased you spoke with the hospital yesterday and that you now feel more secure. I completely understand your concerns about stopping your Bisoprolol before your ablation and it's great the hospital are going to bring you in a few days early to monitor your symptoms and provide support. It doesn't help of course when a procedure is cancelled as the anxiety and stress increase even more.

Hopefully the ablation will be successful, you'll feel much better and the Bisoprolol can be reduced or stopped. As Tim kindly suggested, please do phone us on the Heart Helpline at 0300 330 3311 if you would like to discuss anything with one of our cardiac nurses. I also enclose our heart rhythms booklet in case you haven't seen it which may be of some help.

All the best and let us know how things go,

Maureen
