Hi

I am a current volunteer at the british heart foundation and my main reason to start this discussion is : Does Volunteering From The Heart Make A Big difference? Or Is It For The Sake Of Volunteering?

Hello,   I think Volunteering comes from the heart , when we are ill,  life changes so much so that you need to find new ways to cope with illness, voluntering and doing "ones bit"  so to speak,  helps as a sort of distraction from your symptoms  ( it helped me ) ...   it also helps because  you feel part of a community again  "helping others"  ...   once i started to help others " in my way and with my caperbilities"   i started to feel i was joining the human race again,  as i had lost a lot of health and confidence ...

kathy :)

My view is that there are many different reasons why people volunteer.

I think the majority of people will have a personal link to the cause. Many of the volunteers I have met have told me stories of their own heart conditions or those of family or close friends.

Some people want to give back to their community, and are attracted by work that is being done in the local area.

Some people see volunteering as an avenue to gain experience to take into the job market, or to help them in applications for jobs or university/college places.

Some people like the status that is derived from giving of their time.

Some people enjoy the social aspect of working in a group.

I'm sure there are many other reasons too.

Neil

Tried to volunteer for BHF in Maidstone(new  furniture shop), but was refused after passing the initial interview with the area manager.

I have been  volunteering for Maidstone Blind Assoc. for several months and I also do two half days in the Peggy Wood Foundation shop here in Maidstone.

I have had no explanation why I was told 'not to bother coming back'  when reporting for my second day at the BHF shop.

Is this typical of thier attitude?

Hi 1806 - thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry to hear that you've had no explanation. It would be really useful for us if you could tell us a bit more so that we can investigate this further.

If you could drop me an email at community@bhf.org.uk that would be fantastic and we can get some more information and get to the bottom of this.

Thanks for your support and interest in the BHF.
