Since my attack I've been encouraged to eat oily fish. Now I hate fish but tried some sardines today (for the first time in years) and, yes, they were disgusting. However, many recipies online suggest using hot sauce or mustardf (another hate) on them. Is hot sauce OK after an attack?

Hi Martin,

Great debut post - there aren't many threads on here with the enticing title of 'Hot Sauce'!

I've never heard or read anything to suggest that hot sauce should be avoided by patients with heart problems. I suppose that if you really over did it, you might suffer from indigestion and heart burn - which might alarm you if you're unable to recognise it for what it is. I love hot spicy food and regularly have curries that are in the vindaloo region on the hot scale.

On a general note about fish - there are alternatives. Your GP can prescribe a fish oil supplement which will avoid the need to eat fish altogether. In fact, if you take the dietary advice about eating fish seriously (personally, I don't as it's impractical, IMO) - then the supplement route is the only viable option if you're to take anything like the recommended daily amount.

If you want to persevere with eating fish, I'd recommend trying other oily fish first - sardines are not a good starting point for a non-fish eater, IMO. Try smoked Mackerel (all supermarkets sell it in vacuum packs). Some have a liberal sprinkling of black pepper on them. The trick with these is to mash them up with horse raddish sauce (your 'hot sauce') and spread it on bread. Althernatively, add some natural yogurt to the mix and you have a delicious topping for a jacket potato. Smoked Salmon is the other one to try. You can do all sorts with this to disguise the fishy taste. Do a Google search for 'smoked salmon recipes' - there's loads on the net - here's one to get you started: Smoked Salmon Recipes Roll Mop Herrings are also worth a try, as they often come in a strong vinegrette dressing (necessary to preserve them) and they can be mixed in with other things like salads.

Yum yuum; I've only just finished my breakfast and I'm starting to feel hungry already!

Tim.

I am a big fan of spicy food and I have got a few specialist extremely hot sauces that contain a warning that they're not suitable for those with a heart condition.  I could see why these may have an effect, and so take it easy when I use them.  Your average spicy hot sauce is nothing like this.  So, basically, avoid anything with names like "Sudden Death Sauce" or "999" and you should be ok I would have thought.
