Spent a wonderful lifetime in the RN where the average life expectancy after leaving was ten years and that includes those leaving in their early fortys. I was nearly that statistic. It seems a pressured existence with easy access to good food and duty free drinking/cigarettes (although I don't smoke) is an effective way to keep down the government pension bill! At the moment (2011) I have survived nine years but nearly didn't in 2010 when I suffered a "Hollywood" MRI. At this point I decided to stop work completely in order to reduce stress and have not regretted the move.
I try to exercise regularly by walking but I am steadily wearing out the wood near my house and hope to increase my range when I am old enough to qualify for my bus pass. See below for other interests.
I am motivated by the gratitude I have for the teams who kept me alive - with a large slice of good luck - which has kept me with the survivors. My life was saved by my GP and another doctor who worked very hard to get me going again, likewise the ambulance crew who also saved my life, likewise the consultant who fitted my stent soon after I arrived at A&E and also for the unimaginably kind and highly professional care I received in hospital.
I have had many wonderful times since then and these always bring to mind all those good people whose great efforts on my behalf I will always value.
